Had one of those chaotic, one-thing-after-another-day today. My principal was out caring for a sick child, so I was “in charge”. I’ve been “in charge” a few times before and have made it pretty well. I must say that today zonked me in a major way. There were other more mundane occurrences throughout the day, but these were the more interesting items.
- Interacted with a parent who was upset due to the fact that she was not allowed to enter our building until 7:15 – Teachers only until then
- Principal called to let me know she would not be in today
- Met with parent to explain that it was not appropriate for us to use backdrop family commissioned from an advertising firm as part of her child’s 3 minute student council speech on morning broadcast
- Bus driver brings in two students who were ‘fighting’ this morning. Student “A” made student “B” kick himself in the face, busting his lip. Still not clear exactly how this happened – or whether it is physically possible
- Continued to translate 6 years worth of standardized test results into colorful and informative spreadsheets to share with teachers
- Met with counselor to learn about a group of upper grade male students who have reported that a lower grade female student might be sexually harassing them. Learned that female student in question is the child of a very REACTIVE parent
- Closed office door, turned off lights and listened to The Housemartins for 5 minutes
- Shared previously mentioned colorful and informative spreadsheets with reading coach
- Called sales reps to request sample copies of math textbooks
- Received email from another bus driver who requested that I view a video tape of previous afternoon’s route – older student suspected of loosening screws on back of seat, causing it to fall off
- Called to request tape, but could take 24 hours to arrive. Went to classroom to ask suspected student where he sat on bus on previous afternoon – didn’t explain why I wanted the information (let him squirm)
- Met with mom of lower grade student who chose to expose himself on the day before – explained that his suspension shouldn’t have a major negative impact on his self esteem
- Starving – made it to lunchroom after it has been shut down – salvaged two processed chicken fingers, a pile of turnip greens and a squished roll
- Returned to office to learn that bus tape has arrived – in world record time
- After shifting through 4 days worth of bus trips, I locate the trip in question – I also come across a very interesting conversation between two bus drivers while they are waiting for students to load bus. The two dear hearts are discussing their brutally honest thoughts about the new assistant principal
- Called bus driver to schedule an appointment the next day to watch the requested videotape with principal and new assistant principal – explaining that we located interesting footage on the videotape he requested we review and would like his input in the matter
- Spoke with a lower grade student who threatened to punch two other students while at lunch
- Led meeting of the Emergency Math Textbook Adoption Committee for three minutes (see below)
- Pulled from meeting to speak with two upper grade students who chose to push /punch one another. Spoke with students, teacher and called parents within a 15 minute time period (world record time)
- Conferred with custodian who has been not been doing his job at expected level for the past week – reviewed photographs of dusty computers, paper and dust bunnies in floor and uncleaned white board
- Met with president of PTA concerning emergency meeting of PTA to be held the following night – asked me to run her concerns by principal. Spoke with principal, then had to call Asst. Superintendent, then principal again
- Went home
- Had a beer
- Had another beer
